Yukon Winter Dawn

The Dempster Highway, also referred to as Yukon Highway 5 and Northwest Territories Highway 8, is a highway in Canada that connects the Klondike Highway in Yukon to Inuvik, Northwest Territories on the Mackenzie River delta. This remote, about 800 km long gravel road offers spectacular views onto some of the most beautiful landscapes in Yukon’s Arctic. While living in the Territory for 22 years I have travelled this highway during all seasons. Not far north of the Arctic Circle I took this image of the Richardson Mountains during the “blue hour” on a cloudy day just before sunrise. You can feel the cold in this image! At the same time you get a sense of the vast open space still prevalent in the northern Yukon today.

Yukon, formerly Yukon Territory, territory of northwestern Canada, an area of rugged mountains and high plateaus. It is bounded by the Northwest Territories to the east, by British Columbia to the south, and by the U.S. state of Alaska to the west, and it extends northward above the Arctic Circle to the Beaufort Sea. The capital is Whitehorse.

The mineral wealth of Yukon has been known since the famous Klondike gold rush of the later 1890s, but the combination of an Arctic climate and remoteness from markets has limited the economic exploitation of such resources and the development of modern settlement. Instead, the territory remains among the few frontiers on the North American continent, a sparsely populated and largely unspoiled wilderness.

The Yukon Winter Dawn fine art print has a limited edition of only 25. Most other fine art photographers have a much higher limited edition number. The lower the number the higher is the value of the print.

Morning Glory

My wife and I had crossed the border from Chile into Argentina in northern Patagonia the evening before. We decided to set up camp near a small lake not too far from the border. When we woke up in the morning the lake was covered in thick fog. As the rising sun increased its power, the fog slowly burned off and opened up a glimpse of the lake and the high mountains behind it.

Patagonia, semiarid scrub plateau that covers nearly all of the southern portion of mainland Argentina. With an area of about 260,000 square miles (673,000 square kilometres), it constitutes a vast area of steppe and desert that extends south from latitude 37° to 51° S. It is bounded, approximately, by the Patagonian Andes to the west, the Colorado River to the north (except where the region extends north of the river into the Andean borderlands), the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and the Strait of Magellan to the south; the region south of the strait—Tierra del Fuego, which is divided between Argentina and Chile—also is often included in Patagonia.

The name Patagonia is said to be derived from Patagones, as the Tehuelche Indians, the region’s original inhabitants, were called by 16th-century Spanish explorers. According to one account, Ferdinand Magellan, the Portuguese navigator who led the first European expedition into the area, coined that name because the appearance of the Tehuelche reminded him of Patagon, a dog-headed monster in the 16th-century Spanish romance Amadís of Gaul.

Desert and semidesert cover the Patagonian tableland that extends from the Andes to the Atlantic Ocean. The general aspect of this tableland is one of vast steppelike (i.e., virtually treeless) plains, rising in terrace fashion from high coastal cliffs to the foot of the Andes; but the true aspect of the plains is by no means as simple as such a general description would imply. The land along the Negro River rises in a series of fairly level terraces from about 300 feet (90 metres) at the coast to about 1,300 feet at the junction of the Limay and Neuquén rivers and 3,000 feet at the base of the Andes. The tableland region rises to an altitude of 5,000 feet.

The Morning Glory fine art print has a limited edition of only 25. Most other fine art photographers have a much higher limited edition number. The lower the number the higher is the value of the print.

The Special Limited Fine Art Photography Print White Hunter with an edition of only 25

White Hunter is my favorite Wildlife Fine Art Print of 2019

After years cruising in sail boats and ships around Svalbard a dream came true in June 2019. We followed a swimming polar bear for miles keeping a good distance not to disturb him. We wondered where he was going. Finally our captain looking through his binoculars discovered the bear’s destination: a bearded seal resting on a small piece of ice. The captain maneuvered the boat in front of the seal far enough away so it was not disturbed by our presence. We saw the polar bear diving under the ice and a few seconds later he jumped out of the water right in front of the seal. Not a second too late the bearded seal slid across the ice into the safe ocean. This was for me an experience of a lifetime as a nature photographer and the absolute favorite wildlife image I have taken during my career.

Polar bears are highly threatened due to global warming. They need ice to hunt seals, their main diet. Over the past decade the winters have become warmer in the Arctic and the ice cover shorter. The polar bears are considered vulnerable and the population is decreasing.

The White Hunter fine art print has a limited edition of only 25. Most other fine art photographers have a much higher limited edition number. The lower the number the higher is the value of the print.

Delta – Special Limited Fine Art Photography Print with an edition of only 25!

The production of the fine art photography print Delta involved great personal risk and has been one of my most challenging projects.

It was a struggle to reach Lake Logipi in Kenya’s Rift Valley south of Lake Turkana. During a period of six hours I only managed to drive 10 km in first gear low with my Land Cruiser. Finally the track got so bad that the journey ended 5 km away from the lake shore.

To add to the bad luck there was only a very small patch of rock-free terrain where I could relatively safely take off with my powered paraglider. In the end everything worked out extremely well and I enjoyed one of the most beautiful experiences I ever had while cruising in the sky for 2 hours.

Besides seeing thousands of flamingos in the shallow water the landscape surrounding the lake was decorated with colorful patterns. My eyes caught this small delta at the southern end of the lake. I was so captivated by its simple graphics and color that I almost forgot about the fuel level in my tank; I still had to fly 20 kilometers back to the camp.

The Special Limited Fine Art Photography Print Delta has a limited edition of only 25. Most other fine art photographers have a much higher limited edition number.
In Svalbard during late April and May most mountains are still covered under a thick layer of snow. The weather can change from clear and sunny to rainy, snowy or stormy just within a period of 24 hours. The changes of mood and light are a landscape photographer’s dream. I photographed Arctic Dreams while cruising on a small ship in May 2019.

The Svalbard Islands are located in the Arctic Ocean, halfway between Norway and the North Pole. Here, you will find untouched arctic wilderness and unique wildlife in a setting that is both rugged and fragile at the same time.

Eternal Journey – Camel Caravan in Sandstorm. Limited Edition Fine Art Photography Print of Only 25

I see the capture of Eternal Journey as a gift from nature.

For days we were driving through a fierce sandstorm in the northwestern part of Chad, one of the most uninhabited and inhospitable regions on earth. Occasionally the wind was so ferocious that we barely could see a few meters in front of the vehicle. You can imagine my great surprise when suddenly a camel caravan appeared in the middle of nowhere under these harsh conditions. Until today camels remain the main means of transportation in a land that has little changed over the last centuries.

Special Limited Fine Art Nature Photography Print Great Gathering with an edition of only 25.

The Great Gathering remembers me of one of the best adventure trips. I took this image from a high lookout in Chad’s Ennedi.

The Ennedi Plateau has a very high camel population. Most of the camels are being bred to be exported to neighboring countries like Niger, Libya or Sudan. Camels can live without water for a very long time. Their stomach can hold up to 200 liters of water. This is one of the two big oasis in Ennedi where different herds of camels come to drink every day during the dry season. For me looking down into this beautiful deep canyon onto dozens of camels is one of the most memorable sights and experiences during my 25 years being a nature photographer.

Special Limited Fine Art Photography Print White Ghost with an edition of only 25.

White Ghost is the result of luck, preparation and patience. It all came together during a dense snow storm

In late fall snowy owls leave the Arctic and move south where they spend the winter. I spent a week in Quebec at a place where snowy owls had been seen earlier. I was very fortunate that the young male owl was still in the area when I arrived. It was used to people as the area was covered with small farms. One day I was extremely lucky when a snowstorm caused whiteout conditions and the owl came flying towards me like a ghost. The only color in the picture, the yellow eyes, stand in stark contrast to the monochrome surrounding. A surreal moment!

The snowy owl is a large, powerful owl of the high Arctic tundra, colored for camouflage during northern winters. In summer it may be nomadic, concentrating and nesting where there are high populations of the small rodents called lemmings. At other times it takes a wide variety of prey, including birds as big as geese. During some winters, large numbers of Snowy Owls appear south of the Canadian border;

The Special Limited Fine Art Photography Print White Ghost has a limited edition of only 25. Most other fine art photographers have a much higher limited edition number.

Reflection of Friends – Special Limited Fine Art Photography Print (Edition 25)

Reflections Of Friends is my favorite Elephant Fine Art Print.

Every evening during my six weeks stay in Savuti (part of Chobe National Park in Botswana) in 1997, two elephant bulls came to drink at this waterhole. On one special evening all the elements for a great sunset silhouette image came into play when two elephants walked up to the water in a perfect position. A nature’s present!

The Savuti area borders the Okavango Delta to the west and Chobe National Park to the east and is one of Africa’s best known big game areas. Savuti is a place of enchantment, of beauty, and boasts one of the greatest concentrations of animals in Southern Africa when the Savuti Marsh is fooded.

Savuti is famous for its mysterious and fascinating channel. It runs a distance of 100 kilometers from the Chobe River, through a gap in the sand ridge, to the Mababe Depression. Falling only approximately 18 meters, this channel brings water from the Chobe to Mababe, creating a small marsh where it enters the Depression. The Savuti Channel is currently dry after a few years of carrying water to the marsh.

The Special Limited Fine Art Photography Print Reflection Of Friends has only an edition of 25! Most other fine art photographers have a much higher limited edition number. The lower the number the higher is the value of the print. Please also browse through my other limited editions Limited Fine Art Prints (edition of 100) and Exclusive Art Collector Prints (edition of ONLY 5).
