Description
While cruising in Scoresby Sound this young male polar bear came swimming towards the ship attracted by curiosity and possibly the smell coming out of the kitchen. Our chef noticed it while he was outside peeling potatoes.
Polar bears are highly threatened due to global warming. They need ice to hunt seals, their main diet. Over the past decade the winters have become warmer in the Arctic and the ice cover shorter. In Svalbard polar bears are protected but not in Greenland and Canada. Hence we were surprised to see this bear approaching the ship as they are normally very shy here because of human threat.
