Whooper swans are enjoying the pleasant temperatures at a hot spring on the shore of a frozen lake on the island of Hokkaido. For years I have been dreaming of visiting Japan in winter and finally managed to realize my dream in February 2018. Among the highlights was Lake Kussharo with a resident population of whooper swans. I was very fortunate that a few swans finally came flying towards me and landed in the water kept open by the hotspring on the shore. I like the dream-like feel of this image with the swans surrounded by steam.
The Whooper Swan is a huge Eurasian swan, near the size of our Trumpeter Swan. Birds from Siberia winter in small numbers in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska. Migrants occasionally stray to other points in western Alaska, and very rarely has been found in winter farther south along Pacific seaboard to California. Singles and small flocks seen rarely in the northeast may be either escapes from captivity or strays from Iceland.
The Swan Song black and white fine art print has a limited edition of only 100. Most other fine art photographers have a much higher limited edition number.
