Desert Light at night! I stumbled onto this arch in a large granite mountain east of the Namib Desert. I had photographed it years earlier and meanwhile have visited this peaceful place during many of my visits to Namibia. It is a personal challenge to find new angles of a subject that has been photographed many times. I decided to try a long exposure which results in star trails due to the rotation of the earth. In order to put the center of the star circles at the exact place where I wanted it I had to calculate where true south was. It is a bit more complicated than determining true north as there is no star that will help you on the southern hemisphere. On the northern hemisphere everything rotates around the North Star that is easy to identify.
I took an exposure of 60 minutes. And when I saw the result I was smiling.
